Poetry Workshops

My poetry workshops offer you an opportunity to gather with community to write, read, and reflect. Workshops are guided by the belief that both intellectual engagement and personal meaning-making are central to our learning and growth. Through writing prompts, a deep dive into poems, and lively group conversation, you will emerge with original poetry and fresh insight. Workshops revolve around a theme, a lens through which to examine creativity and your personal story. I bring in poems and texts that speak to the theme and help focus your writing. In a 2024 workshop, for example, we unearthed the shapes, patterns, and movements of our own lives and in the poetry of Li-Young Lee, Leila Chatti, and Louise Glück.

I also offer poetry workshops that include Torah study. Through engaging with this ancient literature, we will connect to old stories in new ways, writing midrash (interpretation of Biblical texts). We will bring our personal stories to the fore with our inherited texts as a jumping-off point in order to add our voices and stories to a centuries-old conversation. By doing so, we add a layer of topsoil, nourishing the tradition and ourselves.

I have been offering poetry workshops to institutions and individuals in Los Angeles since 2020. Each and every time, I experience the thrill - mine and others’ - of deepening our ties to each other and engaging our intellectual, creative, and soulful selves. And the magic that comes when we value our voices and write ourselves into the story.

All are welcome, poets and non-poets alike!

There are currently no workshops scheduled. Be the first to know when the next one is happening by signing up for my email list HERE!

TESTIMONIAL FROM A WORKSHOP ATTENDEE

"Leila's Shavuot poetry workshop was revelatory in how she helped me connect the teachings of Torah to my own soul. She has a gift with words and a unique ability to help those she teaches experience the divine within themselves."
